Having moved from the Xbox 360 to the Playstation 3, I know how much more comfortable the 360’s controller is, compared to the PS3’s but I moved for a reason and that was because the PS3 ROCKS.
The first design they had for the PS3 controller should have been kept, but because it got slated they scraped the design. It looked very weird but also a lot more comfortable. The current design is ok, but should be so much more comfortable.
The photo above shows one really weird Sony controller, but how would you redesign the Sony PS3 Controller? Let us know in the comments.

Firstly, I thought the original design would have been highly ergonomic. Those long handles would allow you to hold the controller further down to have your thumbs over the analogue sticks in a more natural and comfortable position.
Secondly, I cannot stand the design of the analogue sticks. They are too long and with no dimple on the top you end up pushing it around more like a joystick than than having your digits on top like an analogue stick should be.
The left analogue stick should be in the same position as that of the xbox controller. In fact, sony should bury their pride and take a good look at that rival peripheral, because it really is better in many ways.

The PS3 controller doesn’t need any alteration. It’s perfect! Why would you want a 20-pound gorrilla controller? You guys are nothing but pansies. I own both systems and controllers. My Xbox has been neglected for around eight months… GTA IV, MGS 4 have taken over my HDTV… But the reason I got GTA IV on PS3 was strictly because of the controllers… leave them alone, they’re fine!

I Agree with Uncle Junior, The controller has stood the test of time, the old saying “if it aint broke don’t fix it” stands true here.
The PS 1/2/3 controller has changed little through the years, sure a couple more buttons here and there but all in the same possition. This is a design marvel, the only thing i would of changed with the current one they are doing by bringing out Dual Shock.
Long live the PS3 controller and i still find myself looking at the actual console and drooling lol

The PS3 controller is a little too small for long fingers. Mate’s Xbox pad seems more comfortable in that respect. I still prefer my PS3 pad, but probably ’cause I’ve grown so used to it over the past 10+ years. PS3 has the symmetry, Xbox perhaps a touch more ergonomic. Either design beats the Kempston Joystick, yeah? No..?

By turning it into an 360 controller

I have to agree with the two ‘fanboys’ that the PS3 controller needs no changing. I don’t like the XBox controller at all. Maybe it is just what you get used to, but I feel at home with aPS controller, and totally lost on the XBox ones. To each their own, but I hope they never change it (unless they make bigger/smaller ones for different size hands).

I agree with frifter , the PS3 controller is to small I would like it to come in different sizes.
I also agree with Stevo that the analogue sticks are to long.

They should switch to the dimpled (concave) analog sticks, swap positions of the left stick and d-pad, and change the shape of the trigger buttons so that they are slightly scooped and hold your fingers in place when depressed. The 4 face buttons shouldn’t be changed at all.

I don’t like the way they stole xbox’s idea of triggers by replacing the L2 and R2

The PS£’s controller is perfect. Its the only controller that hasnt changed in 10 years-because there was no need. I only ever use my index fingers for the shoulder buttons, and the controller feels good in my hands, not like the 360 pad which is huge

it always seems COPYRIGHT is a 360 fanboys scouring the Ps3 Websites maybe he is sad and wishes he could afford a ps3.
Anyway the controller doesnt need changing it worked for ps1, ps2 and now ps3 dont try and fix what aint broken
PS i had a 360 before any1 says im a hater and i sold it as spares or parts as i was sick of the RROD X2 that i had and didnt want to send to Microwank again.

They need to switch the left analog with the D-pad and make the triggers ore curved like the 360’s, I’ my opinionb the 360 has the best pad in terms of snugness, looks and relability.

The Ps3 controller only needs one change, more neon lighting people! It would be awesome if it glowed in the dark. Also the Xbox 360 controllers make my feel like I have to reach just to use the analog stick that is up top on the numb pad spot. Perhaps a compromise by Sony? Make one that can switch the Numb Pad with the analog stick at any given time. I saw a mad-cat controller like that before. Maybe then the Xbox 360 lovers who have had 1 too many things about the Ps3 be perfect to not buy one.

I would put the ps button a little higher so that I don’t hit in when I’m playing war games. I hate when i’m about to fire..and then hit the ps button and stand still. Xbox controllers are best for sports games ..but ps3 controllers are better for shooters.

I think the design is fine (apart from the silly trigger shoulder buttons, they could be made better), but it is just a bit dainty. If they could do the same controller that is a bit bigger then I would be more than happy.

The Ps3 controller is pathetic, nothing next gen about it. That;’s what my first thoughts were why didn’t the change the controller or let you choose.
But hey sony is loosing the game anyway with a overated blu ray dvd player instead of a freal console as it should be!
Where are the sony only games which rule? When do they get rid of the 720p which sucks.
People are talking about HD tv here it’s SD for the ps3, dumbos!
Sony wanted blu ray domination more than a decent console, andc they made it. But even Blu ray uses the HD DVD Microsoft engine.
Ps3 is still pathetic and no need for a High definition tv when it comes to 720p games! My ps3 is back in the closet i will, keep playing on my here so hated xbox 360.

I wish madcatz or some other 3rd party designer would make a 360 controller for the ps3

I won`t change anything! The Ps3 controller is perfect! NO ONE needs it bigger, like this skkking first generation XBOX Controller…
Sony will get the same problems…
Flashing lights maybe
And eyeryone will be pleased for better quality,
but if you change the form, you´ll destroy the ONLY REASON (at the moment) to by a PS3!!!
30 trouncer // Sep 14, 2009 at 10:10 pm
I don’t really agree with the “don’t change it” policy, there are always ways to improve… even if it is already superior. Though I’ve grown to prefer the ps3 greatly, simply because of the reliability of the system over the xbox, I find the curve of the xbox controllers fit better into my palm. The layout of the controller should definitely be made the same, but I think the handles should be longer, with slight contours on the inside so as to allow room for your thumb and wrist to lie along the sides of them. Somewhat form fitting to the base of your thumb, and curving into your palm could really make a big difference in comfort.
@usmarine I -think- it’s because microsoft patented the xbox controller design. Don’t quote me though

Look lads. The reason all the PS lovers are backing the PS controller and the reason the 360 lovers are backin the 360 controller is because that is what you are used to.
Its obvious that if a person who uses a PS controller day in day out , they are going to feel a bit strange using a 360 controller and visa versa.
So enough of whats better than what. They are both quality controllers and one analogue stick being 2 inches higher isnt going to make much difference.
Have a look at some of the controllers 20-30 years ago. Nobody complained back then.
(Ps Im a 360 man myself) haha
32 bob // Dec 23, 2009 at 5:47 am
I like it the way it is, but I would make the handle-things a little longer so it would be easier to hold.
33 OMG! LOL // Jan 20, 2010 at 6:34 am
Well, I may be a pretty big Nintendo Fanboy, but I am not a console basher.
I personally think that the PS3 controller is great! And i think it stands that this signature style of control pad has shaped other control pads like the Xbox and 360 controllers. They have some major similarities.
Then again, it could be said that the PS3 controller is pretty much a SNES controller with handles and more buttons. With Nintendo have now done with the new Classic Controller Pro, which resemles the DualShock controller.
