Now playing Call of Duty 4 is fantastic and going up the ranks is a fix, but to tell you truth it is beginning to annoy me, I am having major Playstation 3 Cod4 connection problems, playing this awesome game online is ok and works fine if I am playing other online gamers but soon as I want to invite friends the troubles begin.
At first I thought that it may be a Tiscali problem, yes I am with broadband supplier Tiscali and yes they have had serious problems in the past, the question is “Are they still having problems? Let me explain, as said above playing online gamers allows me to connect and play away but playing friends is a no go. Well I have found a way to get connections all the time when you have troubles, what I have found is a pain in the butt each time you have to do this, but hey at least you get connected to friends.
Right obviously go to the play online section within the game, then go and invite people on your friends list which sometimes works and sometimes does not, now when trying to connect to a friends a message now and then pops up on the screen saying “Unable to connect to host” which yes makes you want to throw the controller at the TV, well don’t because I have a solution (Pain in the ass solution but it works).
If you cannot connect to a friends game or indeed your friends cannot come into your game just quit the game and go onto the Playstation menu, then go to network settings, now some of us maybe wired and some are wireless, I can go wireless or wired, in my house I have a wireless router and a plug in the socket that allows me to get broadband connection through electricity.
Now when I have troubles this is what I do:
1. Quit the game and go to menu page
2. Go to network settings.
3. Dependant on what you are on, let’s say you are set up for wired connection, all you need to do is set it up for wireless connection.
4. Once this has been set up just go back to your game and it will connect you with friends.
Obviously if you have done the above and you play a few games and you do find yourself at some point not being able to connect to your friends game all you need to do is repeat the above in reverse, just go from wireless connection back to wired and hey presto bob is your uncle and you can play games again. Go on try it.
Now I would love to know if this is a fault with Call of Duty 4 or if it is a Tiscali problem. I will see what you have to say and I will go from there. At the end of the day all I want to do is play games. Please do answer all of this and send me your replies in the comment area provided below.

I have problems connecting to one of my friends (she’s on Virgin/NTL) but the rest just jump right in. Iunno what the problem could be but it is very annoying.

You need to open certain ports up on your router for cod4…. Its to do with your NAT settings. Goto portforward.com and look for the settings for your router and the game
3 GEORGE // Jul 12, 2008 at 11:37 am
Does the other person you want to play with have to do that aswell
4 BigTownz // Jul 13, 2008 at 1:34 pm
It depends. If his NAT connection is type 2 then no, but if it is type 3 then yes. (when you do a network test on your ps3) Type 1 is the best you can get but you will only get this if your connected to a modem. If your connected to a router you will get type 2 or 3. type 2 is good but you might still need to open the designated ports. type 3 means its closed and you’ll get an lot of problems….

I am having problems connecting to my friends on COD4. I can connect fine on all other games but not this one. Could this be a problem with my sky connect router? If so how do I solve this?
13 pulsarman325 // Oct 22, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I found that the white sky router works a lot better on cod4 but the wireless signal is not as good, try to contact sky and try to get one of them? also port forwarding can help. I still cant get people in my lobby if im host tho, any ideas?
14 Maroongoon // Oct 23, 2008 at 9:08 am
I set up port forwarding for port numbers 3074 & 3075 and yeha it worked. Unfortunately for one night only! I went back in to the router settings the next day and they had not changed.
Can anyone explain that one?
As for your problem Pulsarman I would love to help but have not had a great deal of chance to play online yet with my friends.
15 pulsarman325 // Oct 23, 2008 at 1:26 pm
maroongoon are you wired or wireless? I dont know a lot about all this to be honest but one thing i do know is that sky broadband is rubbish!!!! may talk to be unlimited and see what they can offer, at least then you can use your own router as i think thats what majority of these problems are.
16 pulsarman325 // Oct 23, 2008 at 1:30 pm
maroongoon are you wired or wireless? Go on to speedtest.net and tell me your download/upload and ping results. im gonna call be unlimited to see what they can offer
17 Maroongoon // Oct 29, 2008 at 9:43 pm
I’m Wireless, My results pulsar were both 243kps at 77m/s, Dist 50mi. The sky isn’t rubbish cause it works with everything else fine if anything COD4 is a pain in the arse online. Looks like i’ll just have to stick to playing online with people i dont know. Or las vegas instead!!
18 pulsarman325 // Oct 31, 2008 at 6:10 pm
243kps is only about quarter of a meg download speed which isnt great at all. in your search bar enter the address 192.168.0.1 username-admin password-sky, then it should tell you a download speed on there, then try restarting your router and trying again, i think a higher download speed gives you a lower ping which is good for gaming. might help might not? i ordered virgin myself as i had nothing but trouble with sky.
19 Chris // Dec 22, 2008 at 4:51 pm
I’m also having problems, i’ve got virgin media, and they say i have 6mb i’m wired to the router and still i have problems shooting people and nothing (its not my gameplay) i also can’t host a game, it starts the game then some writing comes up and its over. will the port opening thing help?
20 Chris // Dec 31, 2008 at 2:02 pm
This is still a massive problem i’m not wireless, i have virgin media and they say i have 10mg, and i still have problems shoting people, hosting a game and alot of lagging its got so bad recently, i don’t wanna play it anymore as its so frustrating. thinking of turning to the dark side and get an 360.
21 Thomas // Jan 15, 2009 at 11:57 pm
i used to have problems connecting to games where half the time, if i loaded up with the other people i would only get into the game 20 or 30 seconds after the game had started, even if no one else was on the network, but now that the buffalo router packed up{update went wrong}, i bought a lynksys, all is going well it takes about 4 or 5 seconds to connect if someone else is on the network, but all is fine.
and for the recond i have 2 megabyte broadband qwith virgin media.
22 pulsarman325 // Jan 18, 2009 at 10:53 pm
hi chris, you can buy new routers for virgin from currys etc, try a new router and if it dont change anything just take it back and get refund. ps i dont think virgin has good links to usa which is big prob with gaming
23 Chris // Jan 20, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Thanks Pulsarman, I’ll look into it.
24 KRDRAKE76 // Feb 6, 2009 at 3:14 am
I have searched and searched the internet and the above information has been the most informative as I too am having the same problem on my PS3 Does anyone know if this problem is occuring on Call of Duty 5 (Modern Warefar).
I have wireless internet to my PS3 (which is upstaris) as my only source of internet non-wireless point is in my finished basement and I am not really able to run a hard line to my unit. I have a Wireless-G broadband router through T-Mobil “Hotspot” which is one that they provide for my home phone service. Any other information would be much appreciated.
25 pulsarman325 // Feb 12, 2009 at 4:12 pm
krdrake, If i was u i would try a home plug kit which uses your plug sockets as a broadband connection which means no wireless!! this might help slightly but its prob more to do with router, call t mobile and ask if other routers can be used. cod5 world at war will prob be the same too. good luck

My husband and brother-in-law both play COD 4 and have problems being able to connect with certain friends, none of which use Tiscali as their ISP. We gave the above mentioned resolution a try and sucess! They were able to invite their friends. The only thing we did different was to switch from a wireless connection to wired and back to wireless again. We don’t have either of the PS3s wired and I wasn’t about to let them run wiring through my house.

My friend has done all that at the top there, and still we cant connet. Would i need to do that as well?
30 matt // Jul 21, 2009 at 7:05 pm
i’m having he same problems as above i’ve tried everything i even brought a ew router sme thing happened n does anyone know how to sort the ports out cause i think that might be the problem or could it be something to do with AOL
31 Mog // Jul 22, 2009 at 12:52 pm
AOL is renowned for causing issues for Gamers.
AOL got taken over by Carphone Warehouse a while back, since then AOL has been throttling (traffic shaping), and some of the traffic they are throttling is gaming traffic.
AOL is known for blocking broadband ports for large games and gaming companies, EA is the most common for this. Try playing Battlefield 1943 and you will see what I mean, its pretty much only possible to play this game at around 1am to about 10am GMT.
It is completely illegal for a ISP to restrict access and nerf specific traffic, in doing so they break their T & C’s, you are quite in your right to either Sue them, or cancel your broadband and move to another ISP like Virgin broadband without having to pay any early cancellation penalty.
Matt, try connecting to COD at around 1 or 2am.
If you can connect at that time but lets say not at 8pm, your problems is AOL.
32 Mog // Jul 22, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Also as a note, you cannot get around the issue I have stated by forwarding ports on your router as they are restricted at AOL’s side, forwarding ports only helps if your router has issue directing traffic once it has actually reached your router.
Most traffic when on AOL never even reaches your router, as it is blocked by them.

hi guys chears for the info
