According to a source they have said that what we know already is that the firmware update v2.40 for the PS3 is available today, but they have come up with something really interesting, the new firmware update may have increased the playstation 3 consoles’ backwards compatibility.

Slade from GameTrailers forum poster has reported that he was doing some tests on the new 2.40 on his 80GB model of the PS3, he then found that it was actually playing a PS2 game when it previously would not.

Now not too sure on this but I thought 80GB PS3’s could play PS2 games because mine does. Anyway we are only reported what he his saying so we will let you question this. “The title is Mana Khemia and it was previously unplayable in the other firmwares. It just wouldn’t load up at all and now, it just happens to work perfectly.” All we know is, if this is all true this could mean big things for the PS3, obviously no comments from Sony have been made. The 80GB PS3 has backwards compatibility enabled by what Sony called a “software solution for backwards compatibility is in fact similar to that found currently in the PAL model, the PS3 model which is currently available in Europe at the time of this statement was the 60GB SKU, which we know is not on sale anymore.

So the question remains “Has Sony enhanced the backwards compatibility of any of its PS3 SKUs?
