Call of Duty 4 Keeps Crashing After Sony PS3 2.41 Firmware Update

July 9th, 2008 · 82 Comments

ps3-241-firmware-call-of-duty-4
Now this is something that we want to get to the bottom off, now like product-reviews we have had the same troubles when playing Call of Duty 4 since the Sony PS3 2.41 firmware update.

Now we all know about the troubles we all had when we downloaded the Sony PS3 2.40 firmware update, which left some PS3 gaming consoles dead in the water and because of these problems Sony pulled it offline and went back to 2.36.

We have updated to 2.40 and yesterday we updated to 2.41, now like Product Reviews I am a CoD4 player and this is the game I mainly play. Last night I did indeed and after say about an hour we also had problems, the problems was it crashed when we went to the lobby after the game.

Let me tell you product-reviews, you are not the only one as we were in the same boat. I have had troubles with Tiscali trying to play games and was wondering if this was a problem, but I do not think it is as I have not had much trouble at all over the last week or so.

Surely this means since the Sony PS3 2.41 Firmware Update it has brought me problems, now playing Call of Duty 4 was ok at first but after playing the game I also went back to the lobby and tried to play the game again online and it crashed, restarted my PS3 and tried to play the game and that was a big fat no no.

Each time the PS3 crashed the PS3 froze and would not let me do nothing, please let us know if you have had any troubles since the Sony PS3 2.41 Firmware Update, or is this only a problem in the UK?

hey, yea i kind of had that problem this morning. I was playing call of duty 4 for about 20mins and then it just froze. I was in a middle of a game and i died then it froze. And was just the picture of when i died. Ps buttom didnt do anything but buttom on the console did. Iv never had problems with my ps3 up until these two past updates. Both 2.40 and 2.41 went fine when downloading them but now a couple of days on, its starting to make a problem. Hope anything is wrong with my console. Let me know if u speak to sony or anyone else about this problem
    Yours Faithfully

Getting annoyed with this cant seem to find a contact number for sony either. I was under the impression it was fixed, its making Sony look like idiots. My CoD4 and all my other games are doing the same. Freezing! can anyone shed any light on this? Cheers. Rick

  • 6 Jason // Jul 10, 2008 at 2:40 am

I too am starting to have problems with COD4… especially when trying to get into any online games.. they load, but then all of a sudden the game ends and I’m bounced back to the lobby screen.. any one have any idea whats up?

  • 7 Doy // Jul 10, 2008 at 3:54 am

Same here. I got the 2.41 update yesterday. My PS3 freezes when i play ninja gaiden sigma. When I tried NBA 2K8, after 2 to 3 minutes of play, the audio commentary disappears. And when i try to quit the game, it freezes. There’s something wrong with the recent updates. Is this a preview of another console meltdown?

  • 8 Doy // Jul 10, 2008 at 10:57 am

Now, my PS3 is not reading any of the games i have. Corrupt data message appears. What the frack is going on? I need help.

“the PS3 froze and would not let me do nothing,” - Good England! ;-)

  • 10 oobuk // Jul 10, 2008 at 5:21 pm

I just bought Cod4 last week. It fired up and played well in FW 2.40.

After the the 2.41 upgrade I can’t make it more than a few minutes in the tutorial without a complete PS3 freeze requiring a hard boot.

  • 11 Adam // Jul 10, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Well i got the firmware update, and i whatever game i play, the ps3 freezes when i press the PS button and when i quit the game, there is a complete freeze and no display, holding the power just results in the PS3 beeping three times and does not restart. so i have to switch off and on again via the main switch at the back.

  • 12 oobuk // Jul 10, 2008 at 8:14 pm

By the way, I opened a ticket at the Sony PS site over 24 hours ago and have not heard back.

  • 13 Liam // Jul 10, 2008 at 8:49 pm

    yea im getting the same

  • 14 Adam // Jul 11, 2008 at 6:58 am

Hey i had these problems as i posted earlier, today i tried formatting the system and everything’s working fine for me now. Proud of my PS3 again…

  • 15 PJ // Jul 11, 2008 at 8:25 am

Slightly off topic but, I got a “Can’t start - correct hard disk not found” message after installing 2.41, I wanted to wait untill the next propper firmware update, not a fix to a previous screw up. After a hard reset it was ok again though.
I didnt want to install 2.41 but I couldnt sign in and access the PLAYSTATION store otherwise! :(

Formatting would be the last option i’d choose to fix the PS3. I couldnt be ar$ed with re-downloading all the clips and demos etc again.

  • 16 Adam // Jul 11, 2008 at 10:33 am

well, formatting the hard disk is definitely the last option but it worked yet the system is too laggy… 1 question, before formatting, doesn’t the ps3 allow you to copy the demos to an external storage media?? i didnt have much on the ps3 so it was ok.

  • 17 PJ // Jul 11, 2008 at 10:55 am

I guess it depends what access you have to your machine. There is the backup option in the XMB but if its bricked then obviously you haven’t got many options.

  • 18 kompl3xQ // Jul 11, 2008 at 3:39 pm

I’ve been sitting at the “downloading game settings” screen for over an hr now, with no signs of relief. There has to be some lawyer out there who can win this lawsuit

  • 19 PJ // Jul 12, 2008 at 12:14 pm

    Lawsuit?
    Idiot!

  • 20 oobuk // Jul 12, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Well, I reformatted the disk and that didn’t help CoD4. I lock up early in the tutorial.

Bummer because it wiped out a nicely tuned YDL Linux setup.

I just downloaded the new Siren: Blood Curse Demo and played that. I should say “tried to play that,” it locks up early in the demo, on roughly the third scene.

Am curious if others with CoD4 lockup on FW 2.41 also have issue with Siren: Blood Curse Demo.

Several days later, Sony still hasn’t responded to my trouble request posted to their website.

I ran much better on 2.40. This is my first unpleasant experience with the PS3. I have the 60Gig version.

  • 25 tim // Jul 16, 2008 at 10:02 am

My PS3 bricked while playing call of duty 4 online and I wasn’t even on for 10 minutes. Then sony tries to tell me that it over heated. I find that hard to believe. I’ve heard that doing this might work.

my ps3 was crashing in the lobbys after the game as well but now it wont even read any kind of disc which is more than annoying, im in aus.

I’m from Mexico and my ps3 don’t read any disk after 2.41 update, shows the black icon in the upper right corner and nothing happens, please help!

  • 28 duncan // Jul 17, 2008 at 12:04 pm

my ps3 did the same, played cod4, froze then would not let me eject the disc, rebooted to get the disc out then tried another game, same thing then another, same again. left it for a day then tried again you can guess what happened. called sony told them about it they said do a system restore format and that will sort it out, did it and it didnt sort anything at all. called them again and im getting a replacement ps3 sent to me tomorrow morning. im in the uk and have a 60gb launch ps3.

  • 29 oobuk // Jul 17, 2008 at 12:42 pm

I have contacted Sony twice, via their web form on the playstation site.

I yet to receive a reply even though my submissions are very much over 3 business days due.

  • 30 tim // Jul 17, 2008 at 8:41 pm

oobuk I’ve tried that too. They aren’t replying to anyone because everyone is having the same problem as us and sony isn’t admiting that it’s a problem. Just wait until sony makes an official statement (could take weeks but it better not) because then they will send out thousands of replys at once telling us they’re replaceing for free again.

  • 31 jomi // Jul 17, 2008 at 10:18 pm

i am on my second ps3 since april 08 because of this freezing problem.

  • 32 oobuk // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:17 am

@tim I just received an email from them shortly before your reply (and while I was away from my email).

They invited me to call them at their Customer Services Department and gave me an email case number.

  • 33 tim // Jul 18, 2008 at 2:48 am

Yeah I recieved an email about an hour after I posted here them saying all this crap about overheating so I replyed trying to get some of their “Good Will” warrenty service and giving them a whole bunch of reasons why I deserve it. Hopefully I get a good email response. And if they ask me to phone again, I’ll try to get a hold of one of their supervisors.

  • 34 Frank // Jul 18, 2008 at 3:14 am

I’ve had my PS3 40GB since December 2007 and never had any issues with it until I updated to 2.41, and after playing CoD 4. Suddenly, 15 minutes later my PS3 froze for the very first time. I think it is a result of this system update. Please SONY fix this…

  • 35 oobuk // Jul 18, 2008 at 12:06 pm

I may be fixed but have not tested enough to say with certainty.

Restore Settings appears to have worked for me.

It did not work the first time. It may have worked because I did it again AFTER Backing up, Formatting and Restoring my Hard drive.

I will respond back if it doesn’t work after playing a bit this weekend.

  • 36 oobuk // Jul 18, 2008 at 1:14 pm

Didn’t full work. I just had some time and was able to play through to end of tutorial but locked up on the cutscene for first mission “Expendable Crew.”

Was able to turn off PS3 by pressing pressure sentive switch on front for 4 seconds. Nothing else responded. Tried ejecting DVD and reinserting.

  • 40 EBruddah // Jul 20, 2008 at 6:47 am

I’ve re-built the OS on my OEM 40GB HD 3 times from format. I’ve tried a new 120GB drive still freezes, tried booting without the HD installed and then reseated and rebooted it brings me to the OS unable to start screen. I then re-install the OS and it fails on the 1st try to install then goes for a second attempt and it installs and reboots (Error 8002f176). After 5-7 reboots I can sometimes get to the XMB and when I try to sign into the PSN it freezes. Or I’ll get to the XMB and have thinking icons for everything except the main XMB icons. It’s acting as if the GPU may be overheating. Freezes when I go 1080P but when I keep the rest at 480i I get more reliability out of the XMB. But It often freezes when I try to edit the display, audio or network settings. I’ve only been able to watch a movie a day since FW 2.40. This is sooo damn ridiculous. I’ve never had this many issues with a console ever. If I had known it was going to be this reliable I would have built a new PC w/Blu-Ray ROM and PowerDVD 8. All my XBox fan boy friends are eating this up and talking crap all day…

  • 41 bader // Jul 20, 2008 at 11:50 pm

seems alot of ppl hav this problem luclily i dont :D but enuf bragging…did ne1 try uninstalling the cod4 item under the game data utility?? reply if you have done that….though i guess formatting it would do the same thing. likely it wont work anyways but its worth a shot eh? all you can do is wait for the next ps3 update…hopefully sony has heard our cries for help and will release an update with the fix

  • 42 oobuk // Jul 21, 2008 at 2:17 pm

I think I have tried everything. I feel certain this is a firmware, not hardware or game software) issue.

My gut feeling is that it is a firmware display driver issue by the way it freezes up and once in a while actually loops on a couple of frames. It did this looping on the “Siren: Blood Curse” demo, which freezes just like CoD4.

Here is what I have done in various combinations.

    - Removed all game data and saves (I think that is same as “uninstall”).

    - Formatted Drive

    - Formatted and Restored Drive

    - Restore Default/Factory Settings from the System Setting.

Anything else to try? There are quite a number of people having issues as I see in other forums. It looks like many people who ran GREAT on FW 2.40 are having issues (that’s me).

Sony is not being as forthcoming on this 2.41 issue as they were with 2.40. But as I see it there are more complaints about 2.41 than there were about 2.40.

  • 43 Tulley // Jul 21, 2008 at 3:56 pm

I went from 2.36 to 2.41 and one week later my ps3 crashed. Sony wont own up to the corrupted firmware update but they said they will fix it. Now I have to wait 2 1/2 weeks to get it back. FYI, if you’re not under warranty (less than 1 year old) you’ll have to pay $150 to get it fixed.

  • 44 EBruddah // Jul 21, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I just filled out an online request for return service now I’m just waiting for Sony to send me the box so I can send it back. So 2 & 1/2 weeks!?!?! Damn, I guess I’ll have to edit my netflix queue for DVDs only. I think the firmware got corrupted when I DL’d it the first time. I’ve had issues with my DSL connection bouncing that could’ve caused the issue.

  • 45 Ross // Jul 22, 2008 at 3:08 am

I’ve had many problems with online gaming after the latest update (2.41) COD4 seems to enjoy freezing on me and i cant even switch off and restart with the ps button. I’ve also not been able to play “Team Fortress 2″ from the game “The Orange Box”, i cant even connect to EA online. Hopefully all this trouble should be resolved ny the next update.

  • 46 timo // Jul 22, 2008 at 3:19 am

If they ever release an update, I’m going to ship out my PS3 tomorrow when I get a service ID number (got the box and forms filled out except for that). When I get it though, I’m not going online until they release a new update. And before I update then, I’m going to check all the sites and forums for issues.

  • 47 xbox 360 the best // Jul 22, 2008 at 9:49 pm

After update 2.41 i was unable to play COD4 and when I called sony they told me to reset default setting and that should clear my problem or would have to have it replaced. After resetting default settings the same thing was happening getting a start error message when trying to play COD$ so my friend was having problems getting onlie we swaped COD4 game cd and we don’t have any problems so far.
well the sony interface sucks. COD4 is better on 360, but i play it more on BS3 dude to certain family members that have it.

Went to my neighbor’s house who’s kid had never connected his PS3 to the Internet before. Since he wanted to have Remote Play enabled for his PSP I agreed to set it up. I finally gave in when I had to enable ATRAC for the Remote Play. I updated the barebones 80GB firmware and it worked like a charm. Everything worked fine and continues to work fine. There must have been some corruption when updating from 2.40 to 2.41. I’m still waiting for Sony to send me my box as I now have a case open with them to fix my 40GB brick! So WTF? How come they coudln’t make a more fault tolerant box that doesn’t need a constant Internet connection?

Watching a movie last night, froze and never worked again. Doesn’t recognize movies, won’t play any games after the firmware update to 2.41. I have a ‘coffin’ on the way, but called sony this morning. They said, no, we haven’t seen any problems with 2.41 yet… I said the problems are all over the boards, are you gonna be as willing to admit there is a problems with this v. as you were with the 2.40? He said, “Well, if there was a problem, we’d admit it”… ya… o.k. there guy. Too bad we as consumers don’t have a voice on this. I’ll be without a BDV player for over a month… Maybe its time to switch to XBox… although, I know they have problems too.

  • 54 Tulley // Jul 25, 2008 at 6:07 pm

Wow!! Is all I have to say. Sony is really f’n up their reputation. People on this board and on the actual sony ps3 boards are complaining that 2.41 crashed thier systems. Sony REALLY needs to own up. Its been a week and I still haven’t recieved the box to ship it to sony to be fixed. I can already tell its gonna be about a month before I get it back. Unacceptable!!

  • 55 Tory // Jul 27, 2008 at 2:31 am

I was playing NCAA footbal 09 when i first experienced the freezing then crashing mess. I have the PS3 intercooler, so they can’t say that my system overheated. I truly believe that this stems from the last 2 patches they put out… How can u be a billion dollar company sabotaging your on product?

  • 56 MARCO // Jul 28, 2008 at 4:21 am

I have the same problem with an 8O gb console. After the 2.41 version I have the freezing mess with metal gear solid 4 and with demos installed in the HDD. Even in the start menu it freezes.

  • 57 Alex // Jul 30, 2008 at 11:01 am

I just bought my console a couple of days ago and updated to 2.41 as soon as it connected to net, all the games work absolutely fine it’s only COD4 that seems to be freezing online. I have spent ages staring at a screen saying ‘downloading game settings’ and nothing happens. All other modes of the game work fine without any freezing but just as soon as I click to play online with COD4 It freezes with me unable to do anything but turn the PS3 off and restart it. Sony obviously has a large problem with this with so many people having issues, they really need to pull their fingers out and sort it!

  • 58 oobuk // Jul 30, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Well, upgraded to FW 2.42 and first test with Call of Duty 4 froze right away. I didn’t bother to test further.

This issue is extensive and primarily being ignored by Sony. Make enough noise and they have you send in your box and return a refurb. I hate refurbs. I would rather have a refund in whole or in part and put money toward something else.

  • 59 Alex // Jul 30, 2008 at 8:37 pm

Yeah same here. I just got home and did the same and again froze in exactly the same place when going online in COD4. I don’t want to have to replace the bloody machine I bought 3 days ago, this is just ridiculous.

  • 60 oobuk // Jul 30, 2008 at 8:53 pm

    @alex
Yeah, wouldn’t seriously suck to send that in now and get a refurb. I am curious if you download the Siren: Blood Curse demo if that would freeze up on you too.

BTW, I know this a UK site. I’m US so this problem straddles DVD region codes and PAL vs. NTSC. I have the US 60gig model.

  • 61 Alex // Jul 31, 2008 at 7:38 pm

True wouldn’t be too horrific but still rather there wasn’t this problem in the first place.

I think it may be something to do with call of duty 4 as I signed up and played online on metal gear solid 4 today which worked perfectly and is great so am not sure it is the ps3 itself that is the problem. May be a problem sparked by the update and making it somehow incompatible with call of duty. I will have to give it a go downloading the demo and trying it out.

Yeah I have the UK 40gb model, I think this problem seems to be across the board. Might see about taking call of duty 4 back to the store and try another one.

  • 62 ScoobaDood // Aug 3, 2008 at 10:11 am

I’m glad to find out I’m not the only one suffering here. I lived through the 2.41 patch with no issues but now COD4 freezes on any kind of network game. It even locks up on split screen local play.

Not that impressed by the feedback here - here’s hoping Sony can release a 2.43 which actually solves the problem AND QUICK!

  • 63 ScoobaDood // Aug 3, 2008 at 11:22 am

Found a solution to this which enabled me to get online with COD4. I’m using wireless networking and turning the router on and off fixed the problem - at least for one game…then it hung again whle waiting to connect to the next game.

This problem doesn’t seem to affect normal network usage (web browsing etc.) but COD4 has a real issue.

Testing Warhawk shows no network problems so I suspect it’s something to do wit h the way COD uses the network. Not that this is a consolation but at least you know it’s not a hardware problem.

  • 64 Spydergrl // Aug 4, 2008 at 12:35 am

I had to return my ps3 last week because firmware update 2.41 completely bricked my system. When I called to complain, they took no responsibility. I went online and found that since update 2.40, 2.41 and now 2.42 was released, People all over the world have had their ps3’s crash. In my opinion they are coming out with firmware updates to fast. How can they have enough time to test them. Apparantly, they don’t and now hundreds if not thousands of people are forced to send their ps3’s in for repairs. FYI if you’re out of warranty you’ll have to pay $149 AND with or without a warranty they will not send you back your origninal ps3,they will give you a refurb. I am so fed up with Sony. I have filed a complaint to the Better Buisness Bureau and suggest everyone do this or sony will never take resonsiblity and will contiune to charge people for repairs that their system update resulted in.

  • 65 timo // Aug 4, 2008 at 10:58 am

I filed a complaint to the BBB aswell. Hopefully they help with the issue. I sent my PS3 in out of warrenty and am still waiting for it. I paid the full amount because I knew there was no way I was going to get it fixed for free. I just hope the BBB does something so I get a full refund.

  • 66 oobuk // Aug 4, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I like the BBB idea. Going to do that. Unfortunately Sony needs a wake up call, first time I have seen them go into an XBOX RROD type of denial.

I’m under warranty, however I do NOT want a refurb. I’m very fussy about what I own and have an aversion to refurbs, unless that is WHAT I bought.

I am disturbed to see out of warranty people having to pay for a repair that is obviously caused by the vendor. That is like cracking and vehicle windshield and putting your business card for windshield repair under the wiper.

MODERATOR: Can you modify the title of this article to include 2.42 (and maybe 2.40) so it gets picked up more by Google, etc.?

  • 67 timo // Aug 4, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Yeah the more people that visit this page, the more people that are going to report it to the BBB and the more likely they are going to do something about it.

  • 68 jim // Aug 4, 2008 at 11:25 pm

I have both the PS3 and the xobox 360, and my PS3 is in a constant state of upheaval for one reason or another. . . Say what you want about the 360, but I NEVER have to worry about my 360 going bonkers after an update. It ALWAYS works better after an update, but we already know that once the hardware is out, it’s the SOFTWARE that makes it run. . . Thank god for the google search engine!!! Glad I am not the only one having problems. My PS3 has had no problems until 2.41 but the last few nights my COD4 has froze totally while playing online. This would not bother me so much if you could then get back online without having to wait for 30 odd minutes at a time for the downloading game settings screen to get back in. Come on Sony are updates not meant to improve our gaming experience not make it worse???????

  • 71 Alex // Aug 14, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Well I am still stuck with exactly the same problem with COD4 try and go online freezes at downloaiding game settings, have left it for hours and nothing so I know it is just freezing, this is ridiculous I’m pretty sure people still have this problem. Metal gear online works perfectly so I know its not my port settings and resetting router does nothing! Seems this only happened after the update, I wouldn’t knwo as I got the game after the update so have never played online with this game. Sony need to sort this out now!

Mine freezes up and all kinds of different colors come on my screen and i turn of my system and cut it back on then it still displays randiom color spots and blocks. It started while i was playing COD4 and it keep locking up and doing this after 15 minutes of play after i let the system rest.

I have a solution for the freezing. I have version 150 or whatever its the newest thing. When it freezes press down and hold the Controllers PS button for maybe a minute or so until the black screen with the options comes up. It gives you the options to turn off the controller, turn off the Ps3, and something else. Once this is up press circle and you will be unfrozen. If it doesn’t work the first time try again, it always works by the 3rd time.

Also not sony’s fault, its the only game having the problem so its infinity ward.

ok so the guy above me had this great scheme to stop the unfreezing, i just tried it and an my great suprise…. it didnt work….. who would have thought that it wouldnt work… anyways dont waste your time trying his solution its a dud.

  • 77 oobuk // Nov 4, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Well put Muta. I tried too. Perhaps his technical expertise stated thusly was a give away:

” I have version 150 or whatever its the newest thing.”

At least Fallout 3 is working well.

  • 78 Dangthing // Nov 8, 2008 at 5:11 am

Sorry it didn’t work for you two…it works for me and I was hopping it would help others.

  • 79 Ben // Nov 12, 2008 at 8:20 pm

When I start up COD4 the screen either goes black when I have clicked on the multiplayer menu or it won’t stop “Reading HDD…” I have tried resetting my PS3 and I don’t want to restore the hard drive because I’ll loose all my saved data! Is there anything I can do?

  • 80 Dangthing // Nov 15, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Do the three little dots after the reading hdd stop flashing and stay still. If so its frozen and as I said before holding the Ps button until the ps3’s main menu pops up works for me.

also oobuk I don’t care what version its called, if I did I would have gone and looked it up. My point was that my technique works for me and if it doesn’t work for you to bad. Most likely you have a different Ps3 model or a slightly different problem. So to knock things off…ha ha ha my game works and your’s doesn’t.

Also Ben, you mean format the hard drive. If you don’t want to lose data buy a cheap USB drive and then hook it in. download the game saved files then to a short system format. The long one is about 4 hours. Then when it comes back you may or may not be made to reinstall the latest. 2.52 as of 11/13/08. system update. Then you can reinstall all of your games and use the USB to put your saves back on the system.

Given I think its a game problem and not a system problem.

The best way to sort out this problem is to buy cod5 world at war. I haven’t ever been able to use cod4 online and bought cod5 recently and have had absolutely no problem with it and it is great! A lot of fun!
