  yep cant play high volicety bowling or use my xmb in game and cant even install pro evo soccer i can only play cod4 and even thats running slower since the update

  No problems at all, and nobody I know with a PS3 has either.

  However since the last dashboard update on my 360, it’s been intermittantly reading discs, rebooting, and sometimes it starts to smell veyr hot, with a glow coming from inside…

  See how easy it is to lie on a Blog. Clearly the 40 comments on that site are from pathetic little Xbots. A couple start it off, and all the little brainwashed Microsoft helpers follow it up.

  i’ve had a few problems on my 60gb launch system. whenever i use in game xmb my gt5p crashes and cod4 connects to fewer servers than b4.

  80GB and 40GB, owned for 10months and 6 months respectively. Never a single issue .

  I agree in the vicious xbot smear theory, always have.

  Only one person of the 70+ only my buddies list has had a bricked PS3, which occurred when he lost power while updating last spring (60gb launch).

  Yes my system crashed while i was playing cod4 after it reset itself then it would not read any discs after that. I have an original 60 gig. I called sony this morning and the worker admitted to me that they recieving a high number of calls about this problem and it is being looked into and they are repairing my system for free even tho it is out of warranty

  I MIGHT BE ON TO SOMETHING, PATIENTS IS THE KEY!!!! Hey guys, I have never had any problems with any update until now, I have the old 80giger. I updated to the latest firmware 2.42, and since then 3 of my game CDs will not load. I tried the reboots, and also erased all the game saves, and data; and still no good. After 2 days of not finding any help, something told me just put the game in and wait. Waiting, waiting, waiting, and then after 5-6mins of having nothing but a black screen. There we go, an error saying that online game play, and updates options are not available, and would I like to load the game without the online options, I said yes, and now all of my games work. I then load the online options when inside the game. So it’s a work around for now, Seems like everything leads that that dam PSN in the end. It’s having trouble loading the services in the background, but times out only after 5mins. Give it a try guys.

  I love my PS3 and do not own a 360. But I have had numerous lockups on battlefield…. launch 60gb…. No other issues with ANY other FW even 2.40…. waiting for a new update to hopefully cure this…

  I’ve had similar sound problems and lockups while playing Bad Company online even before the firmware. I figured it might be the PSN or my ISP temporarily playing up. So I’d leave it for an hour or so and it’d work fine afterward. Inconvenient, but no biggy.

  Still havn’t been able to run my 80gig since 2.41 raped it so I don ‘t even know if 2.42 intends to do the same to me again. Needless to say I won’t be rushing out to get it, which means no playing lair with decent controls or anything but the boring desktop, stupid sony.
  No news of a 2.43 either yet, oh well with my luck it would still brick mine just like 2.41.

  Actually with all these errors im hearing about. Im to scared to down load the next update for a couple of weeks. Looks like it may have paid off. I still am running 2.41 and will untill they figure this out.

  ive had problems, though ps3 games work, except when trying to exit them, then screen goes black. cant play dvds or ps2 games now, also some download games dont even work, like mortal kombat 2

  Yes, I have experienced the issue, it started off with lockups mid-game, then to locking up mid loading and now finally discs not being recognised at all when inserted (no game icon).
  This has all corresponded to update to 2.42 and occurs across multilple titles included games that were rock solid prior to the upgrade (GTAIV for example).

  If you stick a PS3 game disk in the slot and the icon doesn’t show up.. Take the disk out and check for greasy finger marks on the back. If its really disgusting the PS3 won’t recognize it as a BLU-Ray disk. Had this problem a few times before I got to be careful about how I treated the disks.

  P.S. I’ve had no issues with 2.40,241 or 2.42.

  I just wanted to chime in and say that my PS3 DOES NOT LOAD ANY DISCS now either. Was playing Fight Night Round 3 when first the sound went off, then it got stuck on a never ending loading screen. After I reset, it won’t read discs of any format.

  I’m an avid PS3 gamer and Xbox hater, like many of you. I went from 2.3x to 2.42. Got the disk error xxxxx error message and now ps3 can’t see or read any of the disks I try to play. I upgraded my harddisk to 120GB about 3 months ago. But I don’t think that has anything to do with it. First of all, Sony fully supports upgrading the disks. Second the system has worked perfectly for the past 3 months. I’m going to swap back in my 40GB and see if it works. If it does, then it can’t be a hardware (BD drive) fault, like Sony claims. Unfortunately the 2.42 firmware is in the EPROM (flash) so it will still be running 2.42. If this doesn’t work, I’m stuck waiting for 2.43.

  I have an original 60gig, it all started after the update and i was playing on cod4 online, the sound goes first then at the end of the match the screen goes black and the ps3 freezes, you have o turn it off by the power, when you go to restart it wont read the disks im am so annoyed because my ps3 is different region than UK so sony UK will not replace here.

  My Metal Gear Solid 4 disc will not load and I get an error message when trying to play Unchartered :/ This didn’t happen before. Hopefully someone knows a solution.

  Did ps3 version 2.42 update about 2 weeks ago. Now console does not read any game discs etc at all although blue indicator light does come on when a disc is inserted. I have checked the disc auto start setting turning it on and then off but to no avail. Also did a reset to system defaults but this did not help either. It is the original 60GB launch version. Never had any problems with previous system updates.

  I just got the 40GB model three days ago and had the 2.36 firmware and everything played great and then suddenly was only having problems with MGS4, it wouldn’t play at all. I did everything. But the rest of my games worked fine. Then I thought like an idiot, “maybe if I just update the PS3…” I f it were only that easy. Fortunately that didn’t help either because NOTHING works at all. I wish SONY had a neck so I could put my hands around it and strangled it. I felt like throwing the PS3 out the window. I wanted to burn all the PS3’s of the world. I wanted to murder SONY. I wanted to breathe smoke.

  if you couldn’t tell, I’m a little pissed. I’m pissed I wasted money and time. I have to go out of my little shit town to exchange my PS3 and I doubt that will work either. I can’t just play games when ever I want, I have work and school and MGS4 releases some stress and I also love the series and have been waiting to play it forever and now I can’t even finish the damn game.   I completely formated and restored the PS3 and still nothing. When you do that, it doesn’t get rid of the update. Thats why people still had problems even after you format everything. Formating doesn’t work, what a surprise. What the fuck is the point in updates if they aren’t going to work. My Wii never has problems at all. Maybe it’s because the PS3 is more of a computer than it is a console. Why can’t things just work.

  Since 2.42 update, when I turn on the system with a disk inside, it doesnt recognize. I have to eject it.

  Another problem is when I press PS button during a game, the screen gets black and freeze.

  Ok here the deal, I’ve downloaded the 2.42 update and as stated by others I too cannot play any type of disc’s and everything was fine up to that point. That was 3 days ago and I have been searching the internet for a solution. There have been quite a bit of people who have reported issues some have not well if anyone has a solution please let me know. The unit is past it’s warranty stage and I would really would like to try and fix it with a patch if I could.

  Yes BIG PROBLEM!!

  I was playing NCAA 09 after I finished playin’ I downloaded 2.42 woke up this past sat to play again and NOTHING!! ZERO!!! NADDA. My ps3 (80gig) will only allow me to play the demo’s and nothing else. I tried wipin’ the hard drive and reinstalling everything but it reinstalled 2.42 and still nothing.

  I managed to get my Metal Gear Solid 4 disc working again. After looking at it under a bright light it had some grease on it. Now that I’ve cleaned the grease off it works fine. My Unchartered disc however still doesn’t function at all, even after a good clean.

  I’ve read on the internet that if you change the BD/DVD setting ‘BD 1024p 24hz Output (HDMI)’ from ‘Automatic’ to ‘Off’ then this can solve some of the disc problems. Unfortunately I haven’t had an opportunity to try this with my Unchartered disc yet.

  Hopefully this helps! Will keep an eye on things in the mean time.

  …my PS3 started giving me issues this morning. Basically i was playing a game of fifa08 and midway through the game the commentry dissappeared. then after the final whistle went the system locked up and I had to reset. On resetting, the game does not appear in the game menu. I have cleaned the disc but it still doesn’t read. I have only tried 1 other game and the same thing happened. first the sound goes, then when you reach the end of a level or the next load screen the system freezes and has to be reset.

  The only thing that I have done that could have caused this issue was I downloaded and installed a load of games from the PS3 store this morning. everything was working fine up until that point.

  I have done a full system reset and thought the problem had gone because it loaded fifa up fine but the same series of events followed. commentry goes, then on screen info (score/time, player name, map etc.) then at the end of the match it Freezes…

  Any one out there able to help me? even a contact number for sony UK? I’m lost for ideas!

  Reading Richie’s comment above. My sympathies are with you, but I had to laugh nonetheless. You got some issues to work through there pal!

  My 60gb (purchased Nov 07) died a week or two after the 2.42 update. Playing COD4, sound died, game crashed, didn’t recognise discs after that. Got a refurbed unit from Sony. That crashed and corrupted the hard disk. Gaaaah. Now have a second replacement.

  I’ve had this problem today, i updated ages ago and this is the first time its gone all wacky! I was playing COD4 fine this morning then all of sudden the sound went and my whole PS3 crashed. It took me long enough just to turn it off..! Now i keep getting the same problems as everyone else.. discs not showing and when they do i get an error message!! HELP!
  I’m off work sick at the moment and COD4 is the only thing keeping me going.. i might have to go back to work if i cant get it working again.. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  I was playing Madden 09 and the game just froze on me, after I shut the system off I tried to go back and it would freeze at one of the loading screens. Now sometimes the system wont even read the disk and when it does I can play for about 5 minutes but then it starts again and freezes.

  When is the next PS3 2.43 update coming out and will it fix this problem?

  I’ve got a 40gb with 2.42 downloaded.
  PES2008 froze mid-game last night (grrr) and PS3 wouldn’t let me reset manually. Tried what others have done - different game / cleaning disc / restore setting etc - no joy. Works for DVD’s (!). Will be making the Sony helpline call shortly. Never had this trouble with NES and cartridges.

  Yes, I returned my first system under warranty and now my second just started leaving an oily residue on the discs. So two systems leaving oily junk on the discs - and it will prevent the games from playing properly or freeze. I can’t tell if it is the firmware or residue but things seemed to work when I cleaned the disc. It took an act of God to get them to warranty the first system, I am not sure if I should wait and see if the issue goes away or try to send it back.

  just installed 2.42 and now my games are not loading just lock up and X button does nothing.
  Tried , drakes , motorstorm , RFOM and ridge racer and when it says dont turn off system while saving and then press X button nothing works just total lockup.
  All worked fine before 2.42 update , i will be on the phone to sony first thing tuesday morning after bank holiday , very mad its wrecked my 60GB console.

  I was curious about this alleged problem and spoke with Sony support this morning. They have no reports of any game lockup/play problems with firmware 2.42. So if you actually have a problem it might be an idea to tell Sony about it. I’m starting to suspect that 360 owners that are bored waiting for their latest RRoD issues to be fixed are trolling this forum..

  Hey Dweller, I hope you are not referring to me in your comment. I don’t own a 360 and never will. I’ve always has Sony, Ps1,Ps2,and now Ps3. I’ve been onto Sony blog North America as that is where I live and came across this site in hopes someone would know of an answer to this not isolated problem. There are many people having this issue and it looks like it may be attributed to the 2.42 update. I will keep checking back on ths string in hopes that somebody has a solution, but please in the meantime don’t be critical of individual’s who have a legitimate concern.

  yeah i have this problem really wish i didn’t like everyone says sometimes the ps3 discs will load occasionally but its like today playing timeshift okay for about 20 minute then when i got killed my game froze no scratches no nothing in perfect condition i really hope this will somehow go away in a few weeks months dredding saying this years i have a 40gig i have’nt done anything in anyway to damage my ps3 nothin i love it soo my HD is amazing i just hope whenever i login and put in a ps3 disc from now on it will read im so upset I DONT WANT MY ps3 to break everything was on 2.40 was fine untill… 2.42

  You’re right I had issues. My PS3 that I spent $450 on didn’t work so I became frustrated. Later bought a new one and works fine. Other than that life is just peachy. Thanks I guess for your sympathies , but don’t try to talk down to me saying I’ve got issue’s. Whenever I have an opinion (sometimes a rather angry or frustrated one) people get all annoyed or telling me to calm down or calling me pal, haha. Like you some God among men, making feel stupid. I fucking hate that.

  I just don’t understand. I see so much shit on the internet, people bitching and complaining or down right pissed off. But no one ever goes after them. I guess it’s because people feel safe behind there computers and think they can say whatever you want. Thats probably why you see the worst from people when they post comments on youtube. You don’t have that fear we all do if we were all talking in person. If this thread were a real room, our conversations would be a lot different. Maybe I do need not to get all upset over a console/video games but goddamn is it annoying when electronics don’t work after I tried logically fixing them. I’m not angry in person. Plus I was just angry because I saw that so many people were having the same problem that I figured is the Ps3 even worth having. Doesn’t matter I guess, I don’t play video games that much anyway, it’s just I was really excited for the new MGS and have been waiting for it ever since Hideo announced it.

Don’t buy a used PS3 most of time they don’t work. And don’t even bother buying a new Blu-ray drive, thats just tedious and a waste of time and money. When you get a new PS3, just wait for the next update if you don’t want to risk it shitting out on you.

  40GB version worked fine until updated to 2.42 - now i have ‘trophies’ but it won’t read discs. I tried restore to default settings, the fan test, the dvd / hdmi settings, games, dvd and blu-ray. nothing. then i cleared everything. i still have the firmware update, but nothing else and it’s broken.

  Sony will not take any responsibility for it. They act like you are the only one with the problem, and say well it could be so many variables. There is only one variable - the updates KILL YOUR PS3.

  Have recently upgraded tv to a Pioneer Kuro 50″ & Onkyo av & surround sound now using HDMI connection.
  Have now encountered problem with some games not having any sound, just a loud buzzing.
  Bizarrely enough the only games affected are those that have been used in another PS3

  FUCK YEAH I GOT A PROBLEM!!! ever since that stupid update *great update, just bad turn out*, my 80GB has been freezing on me from time to time, and yesterday I was playing GH3 and after 2 hours, it froze, i was okay, after that, it would freeze on the main menu, then it won’t read anything, no games, no DVD’s, Blu-ray’s, nothing… and if it does….. it works like for 30 minutes, freezes, and then it won’t even read it for shit…… you let me down Sony…. you let me down

  Since I updated the system and I have begun to notice that my screen begins flashing (or more to the point the image has black flashes lines through it) whenever I pause or I’m on a reasonably stable or static screen. Loading screens especially or any game with loads of white. I had my system set to 1080i on a Aquos through a composite connection and thought it might have been the cause that the system update was screwing with the connection, so I downgraded it back to a 780 or whatever it is and it happened again. So I mailed Sony but no reply. Either way it’s wait for the latest update and if there is no fix with the problem then unfortunately it’s back to to Sony and I WANT A REPLACEMENT SYSTEM !!

  My ps3 is running the update just fine(a 60 gig), but my roommates no longer runs any sort of disc. Sony wouldnt even send him a coffin because we’re stationed in South Korea, and Sony doesn’t ship to APO. He’s mad because he just bought it three months ago. We had been playing COD4 for about an hour just fine before the update. Now it disc read errors anything we put in it.)

  when the update b4 came out my ps3 stopped reading all discs, i had to get a new replacement console off sony i was well pissed until they replaced it!

  Yes, shortly after the 2.42 update my system froze while playing Singstar and now I have disc read error problems nearly continuously. Never had any problems previously and Sony has been of little help so far.

  I have the same problem too with the failure to read to read disc and crashing etc, so I updated to the latest firmware released today (4.23) and nothing is any different still the same crap, it’s not looking good and I was a die hard playstation fan until this let down.

  after down loading a bunch of demos, later that day on cod4 online during loading it froze so i reset it n after wards it plays no sort of cd other than music .iv tried air cleaners , swaps ,restore,cd cleaners turned bd setting to off still nothing works.sending it back let me now if theres a sulution .

  YES!!! Horrible. Most of the time will not even load Rockband or Blu-Ray discs Spider-man 3, Sky Captain - or Reds. If do load, ends in freeze. If doesn’t load sometimes get “This video cannot be played” or “This is an invalid disc”.

  I have 60 GB that will not read PS3 Games..

  PS2 works fine, Demos from HD work fine, but PS3 games will not show up…

  Bought it in 2/07 and its running latest update
