Why Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo should make ultimate console

August 6th, 2008 · 17 Comments

I know this is going to sound stupid but it is definitely worth a thought or two, sitting here right now we have the Microsoft Xbox 360, the Nintendo Wii and of course the one we love the most the Sony Playstation 3, now all you fanboys and girls are always slating each console saying this one is better than that one and so forth, well I have a theory to stop all that.

When you sit back and really think about it the Xbox 360 is very good online, the PS3 has Blu-ray and style and last but not least the Nintendo Wii is the best out of them all for interactivity for gameplay. We personally say just as a one off to see what comes of it, is for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo to get together, bang their heads together and come up with the ultimate console.

Can you just imagine what the new console would mean for us gamers; damn it would be heaven and of course would stop all the childish bickering that goes on.

A gaming console with all three formats combined into one would mean the best ever console imaginable, we know this would never happen but if it did happen the three major companies would not have to compete with each other. If there was only one gaming console the sales would hit the roof for all parties, no deciding on what console to buy because there is only one choice.

Just for a moment put all the my console is better than yours aside and imagine one console and what it would mean for all of us, what would the console be called? Would it be the best gaming online imaginable? Should they try it just as a one off to see what happens?

It’s a dumb idea, and everyone knows it. 3 different consoles = competition, and drives prices down. And you’re assuming that MS and Sony could ever get along long enough to create such a thing.

    It would be insanely expensive!
    What are you talking about?
Not everyone wants Blu-Ray, not everyone wants Online Play, not everyone wants unconvential gaming!
Sure, in theory it might seem like a good idea, but think about how it would actually work out, and it’s ridiculous!

yeah, god help us if this ever happens!

Its funny though you talk about competition being good as though these companies want competition.

Its good for consumers, but as far as these companies are concerned they want the competition to fail so they can dominate.

So if they could get along it would be good for them, maybe even good for us if they don’t try to collectively rape us. But in the end, its not a stupid idea, its an incredibly smart idea.

There’s just far to much pride and belief internally that they don’t need/are better then/and will beat the other guys eventually that it won’t happen.

Least not from these three companies. It would probably take someone like EA, to buy a bunch of game studios and then to develop their own console and put all their big titles only on their system.

Then that would put a hurting on the big 3 and make them consider falling under one roof. EA’s moving towards it, but they’ve got a lot of work before they could make so bold a move.

Ya, if they all combined, no more competition, no more innovation, come on ps3daily, did you ever go through elementary school to learn this???

This is something you dream or think of, and then keep to yourself because its stupid…
The wouldn’t be able to work as a team because they’re three big company’s with big heads. Plus it would cost loads because there wouldn’t be any compaction

please never write an artical like this again, i don’t want to loose my respect for this site

Damn the man shares an idea and people lambast the hell out of it.

Sheesh. PS3 fanboys really hate the idea that Sony could ever lose eh?

You think any one of those companies would be content with a third of the market? The shareholders would never have it.

It would be nice from the consumer point of view, but chaos from the business side.

Actually if you look at the business side its very hard to find a business model that would convince all 3 to converge, As having you own console means exclusive rights to royalties for every game made on it, if you dont have your exclusive rights to that percentage then how are you going to make money ?, nintendo make alot from their own inhouse games, so they would still have some money coming in, though not as much, Sony and Microsoft inhouse-wise dont really do much, they would end up as nothing more than simple publishers no different from EA, though the market would be bigger for each company it wouldnt be by much and certainly not 3 times bigger, they are probably making more money now the way they are then they could ever hope to in this situation,

Though saying that their is always the chance that the video game market could go the way of some type of cloud computing,(i.e. set top boxes) or something, this article up today might interest you guys as well http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10007014-17.html
They would never be allowed to buy each other out due to lack of competition of consumers, but nice thought

It’s a crazy idea if you’re looking at ensuring continued innovation and lower prices. One of the key reasons the West beat out the USSR in the cold war was the incremental impact of competitive marketplaces on productivity. While the first ‘mega console’ would be great, where would the pressure be on manufacturers to bring out a new, more advanced one. Think of the losses Microsoft and Sony took to get all that tech into our homes - if it was a mega console, instead of having to run a lean business model, consumers (ie, gamers) would pick up a lot more of those costs. It’s pretty basic economics, and lack of competition in any market has time and time again produced less innovation, lower quality, worse service and higher costs for gamers.

yes, they combine and make the ultimate console, m$ will make the hardware crappy like the 360 and all their windows software, nintendo will use old technology and cater only to teens, and sony will price it like a ferrari. the ultimate console!

  • 15 Sunny Molini // Aug 7, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Let me try a different approach.

Yes they all want to rule the market, because if their console controlled the whole market they’d get a lot more money. But if they joined with Sony and Nintendo, there would have to be some sort of profit sharing agreement, otherwise the one who doesn’t get paid will back out. And in order for this to be worth their time, they would have to expect the overall market to expand greatly with the creation of this universal console.

But then there’s the rub. If there is only one console, the consumers that only want a light console for interactive gaming won’t have an ideal choice. The consumers that want uber powerful gaming in dark and dangerous packaging might not have an ideal choice. And the same for online play. Some consumers might drop out of the market all together, like the grandmas that like playing chef with their grandchildren from across the country.

If the market gets smaller, all the companies lose. If the market stays competitive, each company has the chance to steal market share from the other companies by offering a more attractive product.

There’s no incentive for the companies. No incentive for the majority of consumers. The only person who would want this thing is the guy with all 3 systems in his basement and gets tired of changing input channels.
