PS3 getting 45 nanometer cell processor and price cuts

September 23rd, 2008 · 6 Comments

Earlier this year the 45 nanometer cell processor was revealed and Sony plans to add this processor to the PlayStation 3 hopefully in 2009 sometime.

Ok now you may be thinking “So what, what has this got to do with us gamers” because I thought this at first, well by producing this smaller chip it means Sony circumvents some of the costs associated with creating the Cell, and with a very much cheaper production price will of course levy towards for a potential PS3 price cut.

Reducing the processor from 65nm to 45nm we know that the power consumption will decrease by a staggering 40%., less power, less heat means better running and of course a much slimmer console possibly.

Yea it’s disappointing that I won’t be able to use it because I already have one. Although I live in Canada and my Playstation does a great job keeping my house warm in the winters. It was inevitable that a slimmer ps3 would come to the markets eventually just like the ps2, which is great!

I’m happy with mine, keeps the house warm in the harsh Canadian winters.
