  Another reason is because the Xbox has been out for three years and PS3 only two years.

  Sony stated that sells have ahead of schedule. They have no real incentive to lower prices. Also, there are no blu ray players that have the 2.0 Profile at a lower price than a PS3.

  The price PS3 will not be cut until next year. You might see a drop in price around tax season and then again next fall. Just how it happened this year.

  This is nothing to do with being a fanboy or a PS3 extremist or even being biast, its facts i have owned 5 Xbox 360 consoles so experience with the machine says it all. I used to love the Xbox 360 do not get me wrong, I just prefer the PS3 it is far superior….

  Or it could be because it has been out for an additional year and sold more units, thus enabling the company to cut prices as it is able to negotiate lower prices with its suppliers. It has also been able to shrink the die size on both the graphics and processing chips, thus lowering the price for those components. PS3 on the other hand has more proprietary parts making it more difficult for Sony to source lower priced components. Another factor may be that Microsoft does have lots of cash on hand allowing it to take a bigger loss on its counsols than Sony is able to.

  Xbox fanboys just saying 360 is better just to hide their tears from PS3 fanboys. They know xbox is crap, while we enjoy HD movies and games. I wouldn’t pay no $60 for games put on a regular DVD disc. When Sony see profit on PS3 then drop the price, that’s when their xbox will drop to $99. I hope xbox fanboys wake up and smell HD in the morning. I don’t have 360 and will never buy one, I got the original 60gb when it first launch and gonna buy another PS3 in November when the 160gb coming out.

  Can’t we all just get along and be happy as a “gamer”. The fact is I am glad the xbox keeps dropping in price. It makes for more competition, and competition is the greatest thing. Without the 360 we all would have spent $900 on the PS3, and without the PS3, we all would have spent WAY too much for the 360.

  I am a PS3 fanboy and im proud of it.
  I live in south africa, one of the weakest curancies in the world USD is 10:1 to our currancey and i payed a well $399 for my 40gb ps3. my country is a country with harsh weather ranging from 35*C-42*C a wonder full xbox360 killer! i have 2 friends that baught 360 because they cant afford ps3, and admitted they will buy ps3 rather if they could afford it.

  AND FACT! id developer for RAGE has said 360 has limited the games space to be modifed to a smaller content package to what they had hoped it to be, Hideo Kojima has said that He will never bring the MGS saga to Xbox because the PS3 is a huge factor and space the blue ray probides in making the game superior, and yes I have halo3 for PC. Cant touch MGS!. GTA4 could have been far superior in size and possible content to prolonged the games story. Thank you trashbox for Making “HD games” polished titles from last gen!! And Thank you for ruining FFXIII for us.. I cant wait to measure the games lenth to FF7,8,9.

  I had to save for months for a next gen console and during that time three of my friends went through 11 360’s due to RROD. I saved for a couple more months bought a PS3 and have never been bored since, nor have Iever had one single problem. 4 RROD ’s later and one of those friends has finally see the light.

  The x-box 360 could be the better value and at present have a better online service but how seemingly intellegent and articulate people can place such overvelous praise for a product which breaks upon a whim is beyond me.

  I have always felt that way myself. I have the 360 for exclusives only. I play all multiplatform and online enabled games on my PS3. Why? I prefer the PS controller -and- of course why put wear and tear on a device so sensitive as the 360 when the PS3 can run 24+ hours in a 110+ F sauna.

  I see the real reason microsoft decided to cut prices, and that reason is because all year the xbox 360 was getting its ass kicked by the ps2.

  yes, the playstation 2. what many ov you fail to realize is that the 360 was not designed as competition to the ps3, but rather as competition to the ps2. That is the reason that the 360 was pushed out so early. For the first year ov its life, the 360 went head to head with the ps2 and lost. The 2nd year ov its life, well.. it still lost. Now that the 360 is near the end ov its lifecycle and is starting to pull ahead ov the ps2, the ps3 is set to *soundly* trounce it. By the end ov next year the 360 will be on sale in the bargin bin for 99$, the microsoft phoenix and halo 4 will be ready to try and take on the ps3, and microsoft will be using the lure ov ‘foreward compatibility’ to stem the flow ov 3rd party developers away from it’s sinking ship.

  I can see why the xbots are ready for the endgame; to them the war is already over. 360 is almost finished; the future is the xbox3 vs the ps3.

  The concept ov a directx video game console should have died with the xbox’s predecessor, the sega dreamcast. seems microsoft likes making the same mistakes over and over again; the xbox and the dreamcast share much more in common then the microsoft code that runs the games. Too bad sega didnt have billions in the bank like microsoft does, or the dreamcast could have survived market failure too.

  yeah, the price drops for the 360 are pretty deceptive. if you say, want to play online, and you own the console for say, 5 years, that’s an extra $250 you just tacked on to the price of your xbox. add to that a general lack of features that cost extra should you want them - wireless internet? wireless controllers? hard drive (for the useless arcade model)- and you’re looking at a pretty hefty some of money.
  but Microsoft’s marketing management is excellent - sell a core system at less, and sell all the peripherals and online use to make the system more modular. skip some QA to get the system out early….
  that said, their console has an excellent selection of games.
  it’s a shame that they are doing so well this generation, since their company uses such dirty tactics. oh well, the consumer (teenage boy) hath spoken.

  I was just about to say that… the REASON why XBOX 360 drop prices TWICE in a month was due to PS2 and PS3 was outselling it monthly. Microsoft knew they had to do something fast otherwise they’re out of the ball game. After the first drop in prices, nope still being outsold. Now with the second price drop, it’s finally beating the PS2 and PS3. For how long, we’ll just have to wait and see…

  As for my preference since I have both consoles, I’ll take the PS3 any day over the 360. PS3 is just waaaaaaaaaaaay cooler with better games.

  I have toa agree with TODDR, the PS3 is a seriously ugly piece of kit (not that the 360 is much better either, might I add). Sony usually make some pretty nice looking kit, but who on earth came up with the design for this sandwich maker? Oh and YZZLTHTZ, all 360’s have wireless controllers. And how about adding the cost of a PS2 for the owners of PS3’s so that they can play classic PS2 releases. Funny how PS3 fans seem to forget backward compatability, still a feature with the 360.
  Oh, and funny how every PS3 owner seems to know someone who has had numerous 360’s fail on them. I mean, 11 failed xbox’s, SURE, that is believable. Do you add one everytime you tell the story?
  As for this story, I believe the 360 has come down in price because they sell more games per console than any other system, so seeing as the 360 has been profitable for nearly a year now, they can make price cuts without getting out of pocket. That is also why Sony can’t cut the price on the PS3 because they still make a loss per console and don’t have a strong enough attach rate to offset the loss yet. So all you PS3 fanboys, stop eyeing up the competition and actually start buying games, providing your pocket money will allow it.

  tellme sony losers how opften do you have to sit and watch your updates installing? data installing? or had to delet stuff to make space fior installs? also on 360 you can play games while the machine downloads off of xbox live - cant do that on PS3 can ya?

  dont get me started on all the orther things that make 360 better then PS3 - yes it iS a more advanced tech - BUT wheres the evidence? Blue ray? i play my console for GAMES - and the best console to play GAMES on is 360.

  PS3 CAN’T cut their price, here is why.

  Sony bet the house on BLu Ray before PS3 as a gaming machine. Sony counts much more on royalties from movie studios and other blu ray makers.

  Sony is caught with their pants down because if they cut the price to compete in the game market then they would alienate other Blu Ray makers by selling the cheapest Blu Ray player at a loss. This would kill Sony’s own royalties from themselves by cock blocking other Blu Ray makers while losing even more money on every PS3 sold.

  Sony ends up being pulled back and forth from games to movies when they thought the 2 would compliment each other.

  PS3 is between a rock and a hard place.

  There’s a simple reason why MS have reduced the price - sales. You have to remember that MS are in business and (hopefully this will not come as a shock) the goal of every business is to make money. So, with this in mind, how many companies do you think would drop the price of a product that is selling well just ‘because they can afford to’? Sorry WTF the answer is none!

  It’s fair (and unbiased) to say that PS3 has in recent months been outselling the 360 - this is widely reported - so with Christmas coming and money tight (thanks US of A), MS have simply reviewed their strategy to appeal to their target audience, which is parents buying for their little cherubs. PS3 on the other hand has a different target audience as it has features that appeal to the over 18’s, but which also mean that the price is always going to be more than the 360.

  PS3 and Xbox are pretty similar the games look the same the game plays the same which obviously means blu-ray (ps3 owners bow down!) is not the greatest thing since sliced bread as you ps3 owners seem to put, a prayer for all you ps3 fanboys “dear our holy blu ray please give us at least one good game this christmas that is better on ps3 instead of vice versa”, GTA IV cough cough, if space was such a problem how comes there is more on the xbox version than ps3, skate ps3 and xbox uncomparable and gow2 and farcry 2 can not wait to buy those.   Prince777 - you are the first person I have come accross who has a speech impediment when writing. Seriously, please read your post before submitting, it will make it a lot easier for everyone else to read.
  Remember, Bluray is simply a storage medium with a large capacity, it has nothing to do with the ability to display HD content or not. You can have HD games running at 1080p from a CD if you wanted to. The xbox 720 (or whatever it may be called) might have Bluray, it may use something else. Everything is pure speculation at the moment. But seeing as it costs $30 just for the license to use Bluray, I would have thought that MS would look elsewhere for their storage medium. And for that matter, DVD is still more than enough for 99.9% of the games out there. PC games, which have superior graphics compared to any console, are still more than capable of running off DVDs, so there goes your argument for having to use Blu.
  Seriously, PS3 fanboys only argument seems to consist of sticking their fingers in their ears and running round chanting LALALAxboxsuxLALALA. How very mature. Accept the truth, sony went from top dog to 3rd place in 1 generation. what a success! The PS3 is failing to deliver on all the hype it has been promissing since inception.

  Amen Peter! Amen brother! lol..You’re right though. Sony set themselves up for failure the minute they laid out what the PS3 was capable of during E3 2005. Fake footage of fancy videos they still haven’t been able to match. I remember seeing the 360 presentation at E3 2005, thinking to myself, damn the games don’t look so hot. Microsoft was being honest at the time, they hadn’t realized the potential of the hardware yet. The games now on 360 look WAY better than they did in 2005. The same can’t be said for the BS3. Their best looking games are from their E3 2005 presentation, which we all know now was rendered. That’s Sony’s history in gaming — a lot of promises. Emotion processor was going to revolutionize gaming, then it was the Cell and Bluray. What a revolution! How many more years do you foolish Sony fans need before you realized you’ve been hoodwinked? LOL At the very least, you have an aerodynamic bluray Digital Video Disc player. I’m a gamer, I’ve had an atari 2600, nintendo NES, Sega Genesis, PS1, Xbox and now Xbox 360. I’ve played on my friend’s Wii and it’s pretty cool — not my cup of tea though. I’ve also played the ps3 and it doesn’t do anything for me. I can’t justify spending that kind of money on a gaming system with ok games to watch movies or surf the net, I’d rather a laptop. Game on Gamers!

  Prince 777 - MGS4 sold 3 million. Gears of War sold over 5 and Halo 3 sold 8.3 million. Obviously theres a difference here.

  MGS4 is over rated but Uncharted is under rated even though it got great ratings. I love Uncharted.

  Fable II is rockin right out of the gate and 360’s 3 exlusive RPG’s have 360 outselling PS3 in Japan for 6 straight weeks now.

  Has anyone seen that new Alan Wake trailer ???

  Prince777 how do you go from a film company talking about maybe buying epic to gears of war 2 appearing on the ps3. and gta4 appeared on the 360 because it is one of the biggest sales markets alongside the ps3 and the pc. it has nothing to do with ms shelling out $50mil. that was for exclusive content. And your counter argument that the ps2 is outselling the 360 only shows that a lot of people still don’t care about hd gaming. that reflects even more poorly on the ps3 than the 360. If you want o start quoting news headlines, how about sony’s overallprofits dropping by 59% this year? their gaming devision is showing revenues of “2.2bil but only profits of 50mil, nearly a quarter of microsoft’s entertainment devision profits of 178mil based on 1.8bil revenue. sony’s profits from the ps2, the psp and it’s games are clearly being eaten away by the fiscal blackhole that is the ps3. meanwhile more and more exclusives for the ps3 are going multiplatform because games developers clearly are not confident that going ps3 solo is profitable. but clearly this is all a sign of a healthy market for the ps3. but hey, be thankful that it is sony that is selling the ps3, because they are incredibly stubborn when it comes to their developments. most other firms would have killed the project a long time ago.

  did know that GTA sales more when exlusive than multiplatform. For example, GTA 3 sold 11.6 millions copies on PS2, while GTA4 sold only 10.6 copies for all platform. That’s why Rockstar said all future games only on PS3, GTA4 the only game be on shitbox. When GTA5 coming out everybody gonna jump the band wagon, and shit box won’t see daylight again.

  Let’s not forget who backs Xbox: Microsoft. Microsoft is a financial powerhouse. They lost millions on the Xbox console and can afford to do the same on the Xbox 360. Even if they don’t break even with software and accessory sales (for whatever reason), they have no financial worries. On the other hand, if Sony tried the same stuff, they would lose so much.

  In any case, DVD technology is *cheap*. The PS3 should never drop to the same price as the Xbox 360 because blu-ray technology is far more pricey at this point in time.

  And “The Guy”, please recall where the majority of those award winning games came from — the PC. You and prince are being equally ignorant.

  1. Console makers make their money on software and accessorie sales, not selling consoles. Getting more consoles into the market means selling more software and accessories.

  2. PS3 being a Blu Ray player is keeping Sony from cutting the price. Think about this. Sony’s big bet on PS3 was Blu Ray first, not games. Sony was thinking about the royalties from studios and other hardware manufacturers making Blu Ray players.

  If Sony decided to compete in the game market first and drop the PS3 price then they would alienate major Blu Ray manufacturers AND kill their own profits and royalties by selling the cheapest Blu Ray player at a substantial loss.

  Sony is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

  Ok, alot of good points have been brought forward on both sides. but now it’s time for simple FACT
  1) PS3 has free online play, XBOX360 don’t
  2) PS3 has a bluray player, XBOX360 don’t
  3) XBOX users will now have to PAY to repair their xbox if infected with the RROD.
  4) It’s true the PS3’s variety of games is limited compared to the XBOX but keep in mind the XBOX had a full year head start on the PS3.
  5) Microsoft lost over 700 million dollars on the launch of the XBOX360, combine that with the amount they have lost through repairing XBOX’s for free it’s no wonder they had to lower the price.

  these differences can go on forever, but at the end of the day, you get alot more free stuff with PS3. so you spend more than you would on a XBOX remember how much the XBOX was when that was launched, and even then if you bought the cheaper version you got half a console.

  i know how much it is in England, coz i live in England i got my ps3 on launch day, if blu-ray ain’t shit then how comes since the launch of the ps3 microsoft have launched the Elite version of the console and next year are launching yet ANOTHER version called the ultimate that has a hd player in a attempt to keep up. and true the xbox GTA IV has more content but let’s face it what other games do Microsoft have going for them anymore, well exclusive ones anyway the only ones thats coming to mind are Halo and Gears of War.

  The ps3 is ugly. I know, I bought one. I managed to persuade the missus it was a good idea on the merits of blu-ray. Now VOD is going to make that not so important, but it’s still nice to have. The games blow me away, the movie playback is so so quiet and seamless, the music player is a nice bit of kit.But with processing power of 2teraflops/sec that’s one awesome piece of kit. I’m not even sure anyone will get their heads around developing and utilising it’s full capability before it is obsolete. That’s a shame. Technically its processing power puts it in the supercomputer league. It would be a shame to waste that potential. I’m looking forward to installing linux on mine. I have been engineering software for the past eight years, using Microsoft OS version throughout all of it. And I know Linux is better but the MS giant takes over all and it’s tough for anyone to get a decent share of the market.

  Be grateful you have the choice of two awesome machines. Imagine a world where the technology train stopped at the Sinclair ZX.

  I think PS3 is fantastic, I had a 360 but got RROD, now Gears 2 is out i might get another 360, just as long as the RROD annoyance is sorted, it’s a real pain when that happens. I like both console, and both consoles have there positives and negatives, but the RROD is a massive negative that put me right off when it happened to mine. Hope they sort it out, Gears 2 looks great. But so far after owning both, PS3 comes out on top, the next six months are looking great for PS3. Come on Microsoft, a Red Ring free 360 would be great, despite still only using DVD discs.

  yes both systems have pros and cons i own both 360 and PS3 i like the PS3 but the lack of good software lets it down i own 2 xbox360’s well 1 is my 5yr old son’s coz he didnt want a PS3 and i have had the rrod on my sons xbox and got it replaced within 16 days (nice 1 MS) and will say this, gears of war 2 is the best game ive ever played it has it all

  and you can turn off the blood and bad lang so all good for younger players and no b4 you start i dont let my son play it

  I live in Costa Rica, so I can’t send any console to service in case of RROD or something. For that reson I bought a PS3 because of quality. But two months ago, my 40 GB PS3 throw error code 80010514 (laser lens failure), so I bought a brand new laser replacement and replaced by myself. I think all that firmware updates are the reason of this error, but I ‘m not sure.
  The PS3 is not 100% failure proof, but definetively is better than all that RRODs.

  @ PS3 Rules - Wireless controllers are included in ever itteration of the 360. If you feel you need a HDD, buy the 360 60gb version for £30 more. As for PSN = XBL, as far as I am aware there has been little evidence of server problems with XBL, compared to heaps of issues with reliability of servers over PSN. On the other hand, how about complaining to sony for not bundeling a headset or not catering for IR remote controls or removing all backward compatability to PS2 games?

  Remember Gears of War and the fiasco they had to start with? Microsoft TOTALLY took the blame for that , syaing the XBL had “major issues” (and that was a comment from a MS VP). Remember COD4 and it’s fiascos? EA pointed the finger directly at MS’s XBL for being the cause of the issues.

  Agaijn, point out for me SPECIFIC issues that the PSN servers have had? Because I’m still waiting for anyone who blasts the PSN to give me those examples that were specifically the PSN’s fault. (Yes, there have been server downtimes, but it’s been just as common an issue on the XBL.)

  As for the headset bundling… Again, remember when they first started pushing out the PS3, it was aimed with BC, because Sony figured that would be the big seller… if it was backwards compatible, the assumption was that PS2 owners were moving up.. so why not let the PS2 hardware (USB keyboards/headsets/etc.) be transferable?

  Admittedly, it took forever for anyone to make a reliable blue-tooth headset for the system (Jaffra was the first… Madcatz is servicable (i use it), but it’s questionable at best… Sony’s third one has been teh best of the lot)

  IR remote controls… okay, that one I can give you… considering the B.R. player was a big one.

  All backwards compatability was removed… A) they got all the PS2 owners that were upgrading that they could get. B) It knocked off $150 from the price tag.. (i think it was $150 USD) by removing that technology…

  There are a lot of reasons why Microsoft choose to have a price cut, but it is undeniable the one of them is that Microsoft had to do it to stay competative with the PS3. Mircosoft is all about making money and if they thought they would still be able to stay competive and not lower thier price they would have done it. If Microsoft thought they could get away with it they would raise thier price. Now just to explain I am not a Sony fan boy because I believe Sony is just the same and would do the same if they could, but to stay comepitive Sony did not have to lower thier price, Microsoft felt they did.
  Now as far as quality, even microsoft fans have to admit that the PS3 is a better built system. This is not to say that either system has better games, just that Sony took thier time designing the system and making sure they used quality parts. From my personal experience my roommate and I purchased an xbox, PS3, and Wii on thier release days. We still have our orignal 60GB PS3 which I play alot and our original Wiis. I am on my 4th xbox 360 and he is on his 6th which just RROD on Friday. So as far a quality the XBOX was build and designed cheaply. Now one of the advanages of cheaper parts is that they can sell the final product to the consumer for a cheaper price, or you can follow the microsoft model and mark up the price more to make a bigger profit as seen with thier $100 60GB hard drive. This gives them plenty of room to then later reduce the price and still turn a profit.

  Lol, very true about the build quality, but it was that year behind that has meant there is competition, if ps3 came out a year earlier with this psychedelic blu ray no one would have bought the 360, xbox 360 feel that they have done there bit and that everyone who wants one has bought one, so they are now just collecting the last few consumers by lowering there price for Christmas, maybe they saw there sales slowing down or saw the credit crunch coming and decided to take advantage.

  FooLs.. i disagree saying ‘no one would have bought one’.. There will always people loyal to any given brand.

  For instance, I will almost always stick wtih Dell for my PC’s/laptops.
  I will always stick with Sony for my gaming consoles, and probably forever stick with Dynex for all my TV purchases.

  So there will always be people that will loyally (not blindly, but loyally) stick to another brand name (microsoft in this case)

  Loyally is just an excuse for blindly, if Lambo made a crap car and charged people millions and their was a ford for 110,ooo that was 10 times as good, looked nicer, and everyone wanted one, there are people that would buy the lambo instead, loyally, blindly same thing, although its not necessarily quite so clear cut with the console. (If you buy something because of loyalty, you buy the sony product over the microsoft because of the brand, loyally usually implies that there is something out there that is better but (blindly) overlooked it because of the brand) .

  In truth you need a good balance of loyalty and logic. I have always liked Sony’s gaming systems so I have always bought them but lets say that the Ps4 came out and it was a piece of junk. I would at first want it, then research it, then learn it sucked, then decided I no longer trusted their brand.

  A good example of losing loyalty to something is this. I purchased Ps3’s Resistance Fall of Man and basically marked it down as my favorite game of all time. A year later…at least for me, the next game came out and I bought it. I did look at reviews but when it gets 9-10/10 it seems like a safe deal. I bought it and loved it but it has so many problems with it that I am highly disappointed. The next game coming from that company will probably end up getting rented for a dollar before I make a purchase.

  Loyalty can be good but you need to think things through and research them. Also never buy from Belkin the router company. Worst routers I have ever had.
