Well PS3 firmware version 2.76 is now live, so whats new I hear you ask?
And the honest answer to that would be……. nothing, nowt, niente, nada!
Well nothing exciting, unless of course you find pairing up long lost socks from under your bed to be exciting, in which case this will most likeley be the highlight of the month for you.
As the US Sony Playstation blog tells us “This is a minor update that improves the playback quality of some PS3 format software”. So there you have it folks, a big download that gets you nothing more than half an hour of boredom (depending on your Internet connection and the Playstation servers).
If you have any opinions on this let us know! Would you rather updates like this be optional? Do you think these small updates are essential to increasing the ps3’s potential? Do you wish you could still use the ps3 (at least while the update was downloading)? We would love to hear from you on this!

Same old same. I would like to see an update that allows for me to play my PS2 games on my PS3. Now that would be an update. DO IT SONY! DO IT NOW! Pretty please?
2 andac // May 14, 2009 at 11:44 am
These updates are essential but maybe there is another way around them, while others like getting technical with games like getting online and chatting, pairing with others etc there are others that like to switch it on and just play, for example now, i am waiting for it to download and have absoulutly no idea how long it is going to take, there should be some sort of update for the user along the way aswell

I would certainly prefer to have these minor updates as optional and also as background downloads.
The best would be optional, and where the user can tell the PS3 to download, install and then turn itself off afterwards so it can do all this while we sleep.

@ Grandt - background downloading should be a given really then a little msg pop up telling the user it’s ready to be installed. as it is i now have to wait 1/2hr or so before i can even get to look at this weeks Store update.

I think sony is just securiting their own business by locking some gaps in the system, probably against piracy, which would cost them some money.

Try comparing your trophies with one of your friends. Apparently this is much faster in the new firmware (haven’t tried it myself yet).
7 Mog // May 14, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Havn’t noticed much difference as far as trophy comparison goes, I think that might be a rumour ^^
8 neo // May 14, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Trophy comparison is much faster on my PS3. At least by a factor of 5.

music while playing games would be an awesome update AND MORE COOL BACKGROUNDS FOR THE MUSIC THING its getting boring with the planet thing.
10 Dwar // May 15, 2009 at 5:43 am
A nice update would if sony would let us use or own music while playing games.
11 Anonom // May 15, 2009 at 7:30 am
I agree with the ps2 playback, and more major updates like the text chat, a live messenger program similar to xbox360’s msn would be nice, and im sure sony could improve on the messenger as xbox seems slow and tedious with their msn. But still minor updates are important, and I hope to see more frequent and exciting updates in the future, keep up the good work sony.

I recnetly ditched my xbox for a ps3 which is the best thing i ever did. It would be good to have the choice to update or not really as im sure that microsoft gave you the choice to update straight away or do it at a later date. Come on sony it shudnt be to hard to do this should it. Defo need to enable background download also.

My PS3 does have PS2 compatibility.
For once being an early adopter has paid off! I am perfectly content with what the system can do at the moment. Bliss I tell you. Although playing your own music while playing games would be a welcome feature, and maybe GOW3 getting here faster.
14 Mog // May 15, 2009 at 4:01 pm
I’ll second that JM, Emotion chip for the win!

No music during game play. I don’t need to hear your Hanson/Jonas Brothers crap because you’re too inconsiderate to turn your bubblegum crap down. If they’re going allow music playback; they need to build a universal mute button first.

i would like to listen to my music when im playin games now that would be a cool update:D
17 hOSPITAL // May 17, 2009 at 8:28 am
I just download the update on my desktop then install it on my ps3… then the download takes 3mins on my connection. Not really a problem.
+ its good to get updates… I’m still hoping for bug fixes on fallout
18 Toadyboy72 // May 17, 2009 at 11:15 am
You can play your own music while playing games, ive done it on Warhawk and wipeout!

to view anything on certain websites u need a flash player, the PS3 doesn’t have it…..why not??
21 mobiletone // May 18, 2009 at 8:05 am
@ hOSPITAL - Fallout seemed to freeze a lot less when i was mashing a session yesterday, even then it wasn’t a turn the whole console off job, just had to wait a minute for it to unblock it’s pipes, a new thing was towards the end, 6+hrs in, it lost the character voices during speech events, never had that before.
22 Mog // May 18, 2009 at 12:24 pm
@MrD_007
I believe the PS3 does support Flash, has done for quite some time, I watch youtube videos on the ps3 browser, watch entire films and TV shows via BBC i-player etc etc etc
But it is quite possible that the content you are trying to view has a newer version of the Flash engine that your PS3 currently has, in which case the content won’t show up, or may show up poorly.

@1 and 11:
PS2 playback depends on your console, it was originally on the systems, but Sony dropped it in an effort to make the systems cheaper. If you want PS2 emulations buy one of the original 60GB models, by far the best PS3s out there.
and @anyone who mentioned Flash:
the PS3 DOES support Flash, I even think there’s an option to turn it on and off in the settings.
@article:
I really do think background downloading should be no problem and should be done. Although optional downloads seem a bit iffy, people would just not bother downloading and then complain when things don’t work and new and old updates for games and OS would clash and things. Mandatory DLs are good I think.

@Gizmoi
Just to extend on what Gizmoi said
Here is the details of what each console can actually achieve as far as PS2 compatability goes:
1) Original 20gb Japanese PS3 (Model - CECHBxx) came with no WiFi or Flash Card readers, it was first available in November 2006 and had Super Audio CD support and also had COMPLETE PS2 back compatability via a little chip called the “Emotion Engine Chip”. - This PS3 is no longer in production.
2) Original 60gb PS3 (NTSC Region) (Model - CECHAxx), first available November 2006 and came with WiFi and Flash card readers, it had Super Audio CD support and also had COMPLETE back compatability via the “Emotion Engine Chip” - This PS3 is no longer in production.
3) Original 60gb European PS3 (PAL) (Model - CECHCxx) launched March 2007, came with WiFi and Flash Card readers, it has Super Audio CD support and also had PARTIAL back compatability via software - This PS3 is no longer in production.
4) 80gb NTSC PS3 (model - CECHExx) launched August 2007, came with WiFi and Flash Card readers, it has Super Audio CD support and also had PARTIAL back compatability via software - this PS3 is no longer in production.
5) 40gb PS3 (model numbers - CECHgxx/CECHHxx) launched October/November 2007, this budget unit came with only 2 usb ports, it did come with WiFi, it has no Flash Card reader, it had no Super Audio CD support or PS2 compatability - This PS3 is no longer in production.
6) 80gb PS3 (Model - CECHKxx) launched August/October 2008, comes with only 2 USB ports, comes with WiFi, has no Flash Card reader, has no Super Audio CD support or PS2 compatability - This PS3 is a current product and is still manufactured.
7) 160gb PS3 (Model - CECHPxx) launched October/November 2008, comes with only 2 USB ports, comes with WiFi, has no Flash Card reader, has no Super Audio CD support or PS2 compatability - This is a current product and is still manufactured.
-NOTE-
PS2 Compatability is region affected unlike PS3 games.
Flash is on the PS3, but the current version is not the latest Flash Version available.

Is it me or has anyone elses ps3 stopped playing ps3 games after they’ve done this download?
26 mobiletone // May 27, 2009 at 5:47 pm
@ castleraider - it’s you, sorry. i’d suggest backing up your hardrive if you can and reformatting it totally. then restoring all your stuff. my PS3 died a few times back in the early days but since i dumped the standard hd and fitted a new 250Gb model i have had zero problems.
27 andy // Jun 4, 2009 at 5:00 am
hey stephen
my ps3 can play ps2 and 1 games just fine
so yours should be able to?
28 Grandt // Jun 4, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Andy, only the first generation PS3 consoles, and then only the 60 and later the (US) 80 GB models could do that. All other models do not have the ability to play PS2 games as they lack the needed hardware.
29 kevin // Jun 18, 2009 at 9:50 am
granmd theft auto 5 the game
30 George // Jun 20, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Grandt, when I update there is a tick box to select automatic turnoff after the update. I’ve never actually used it though I don’t know if it works or not.
31 Grandt // Jun 22, 2009 at 12:33 pm
George, it can do that on regular downloads, I have never tried it in firmware updates, problem being that once the firmware starts downloading, you are committed to completing them.
I understand that Sony will want to have a homogeneous setup on their consoles, but what is needed it the ability to tell the console to wait with the update till you are ready for it, ie are logging off. As it is the Console pretty much bar you from doing anything that require being logged into the PSN until the update is complete.
32 Conor // Jul 22, 2009 at 1:00 pm
my ps3 wont let me play need for speed pro street it says i need to update and when i do it doesnt work
tell me how to fix it
33 fabs // Jul 23, 2009 at 10:51 am
i would like to see an update where you can be playing a game and have music from the hardrive playing in the background like the the xbox 360 have.
