Well the Sony Playstation US Blog said this earlier on this week “Hello, I just wanted to provide everyone with a head’s up that the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update (v2.80) will be coming soon. The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved”. Well the firmware came out, and boy, oh boy! It’s actually a cracker! Read below to find out all the details.
Ok, so if your wondering why the heck you haven’t had your system ask you to update your console yet, even though the firmware has been out for quite a while now. Well that’s because its an optional update (Yes Sony have been listening to our rants about being forced into downloading small pointless firmware updates all the time), you can get it by going to the “System Update” option at the top of the settings list on your X-Media Bar (XMB) and download and run the update from there.
Here is whats been changed/improved in firmware 2.80 that we know of so far:
- XMB works smoother and faster while in-game.
- Wireless PS3 Controller now is auto-assigned controller number one at start up, instead of any USB devices that you have plugged into the ps3’s USB (like Guitar Hero wireless dongles and such like, this has been needed for a long time!)
- Text chat now enables 64 characters per message instead of 32.
- The official Bluetooth wireless PS3 headset now has its microphone volume locked to level 3.
- Open Remote Play (ORP) has been de-activated in 2.80 for security reasons (not Remote Play, Open Remote Play is a home-brewed application that allows you to remote play onto your ps3 via your PC or Mac).
- PS1 game titles loading times have been decreased.
Also there are a few things we haven’t been able to test and confirm ourselves yet, and they are:
- Internet browser runs smoother and loads less corrupt pages.
- Trophy card loading is quicker (in-game and out of).
- A bug which allowed friends to be displayed offline has been fixed.
Have you noticed anything we haven’t? let us know below!

I wonder when will Sony finally do the firmware update for mkv video container support. I wonder if they even plan to do an update like this…
5 anon // Jun 28, 2009 at 10:45 pm
arstechnica is reporting that it breaks hulu? or maybe hulu updated at the same time to not allow the ps3?
6 anon // Jun 28, 2009 at 10:49 pm
err, engadget, not arstechnica.

I believe they just need to upgrade their site to allow the updated ps3 version.
When you upgrade your firmware, you upgrade your security, if the site you are accessing the content from only allows specific clients/platforms/regions etc etc Then there has to be a list which identifies what can connect, now my guess is they probably just haven’t updated the list to accept the firmware updated ps3.
This would be correct if the previous firmware version still allows you to view the content.
Its like a game server, when you set one up you tell it to only accept client above “x” Version, x being the version you specify, anything below or above that gets rejected. Usually forcing an update.
These security measures are in-place to prevent a whole manner of various problems. Thats why you can’t connect to the PSN on your PS3 without updating the PS3 Firmware (unless your firmware is in the allow), this is usually to remove any connection you have with the PSN, firmware updates are usually issued to close loopholes in the ps3 and its networking that can be exploited. For example can anyone remember Firmware 2.40? That firmware caused certain units to break, but that firmware also allowed the ability to install the development firmware on the machine, potentially a massive security risk. Hence why that firmware was taken down and updated very quickly.

the latest 2.80 also killed off the Open Remote Play application that allowed you to access your PS3 via a PC in the same way as your PSP does.

Lol Mobiletone, did you even read the article?
“■Open Remote Play (ORP) has been de-activated in 2.80 for security reasons (not Remote Play, Open Remote Play is a home-brewed application that allows you to remote play onto your ps3 via your PC or Mac).”

-hhah- i just had to check it out first to make sure is am teh facts
you try running ORP and the video signal just bombs after a short time, apparently if you reconfigure your PCs MAC address etc to the same as the PSPs it starts working again. too much trouble if you ask me.. plus i have a PSP anyway

What does the new 2.80 version do? What does it improve and what others things can you do that you couldn’t do before?

My PS3 has developed quirks following the update. Key tones while navigating the XBM went silent. Came back for awhile, then disappeared again. One movie’s audio was really scratchy. Major delay in streaming music, but that may be my router, which I reset and seems to be running normally now. Key Tones keep disappearing though.

I know its probably a long shot, but I’m hazarding a guess that no one else is inactive enough to have it…. but its time for a change of name…. and that change is PS3 MONTHLY….. though we could argue for bi-monthly or even stretch to annual anyone?!?!?
Seriously.. hand over the rains to people who care… or post a link to a site that features NEWS, like digital spy.co.uk

Since the 2.80 update I’ve been having minor issues with movie playback. About half way through a Firefly episode and half way through a DVD -R movie the playback froze. I had to fast forward to continue. While rewinding through the bad spot I could see the video but trying to play again would just hang…
26 jerae // Jul 23, 2009 at 6:18 pm
